The Provincial Flower of New Brunswick is the purple violet (Viola cucullata) it is a perennial which flowers from May through July. It is stemless, with leaves and flower stocks growing directly from rootstocks.  The flowers of the purple violet have been used in jams and syrups, and are supposed to have properties to soothe the digestive tract and suppress a cough. The flower was adopted as the New Brunswick floral emblem in 1936, at the request of the provincial Women's Institute.  It grows in the shadier areas of the site on the field edges.

The Painted Trillium (Trillium undulatum) is a wildflower of the genus trillium found from the Great Smoky Mountains to Ontario and east to Nova Scotia, and plenty in certain areas of our site. It is also known as the painted lady or trille ondulé. It demands strongly acidic, humus-rich soils and tends to be found in the shade of acid-loving trees such as eastern white pine, red maple, hemlock, red spruce and balsam fir.

The flowers are singular with three white petals and red or purplish stripes at the base.  The leaves are whorled at the top of the stem.  Plant height is 12 inches and it blooms from May until June.

Classified as RARE, the Yellow Lady's Slipper is a fairly common ORCHID in New Brunswick.  Heights vary from 4" to 24" depending on the environment and carry a fragrant flower.  We have a few patches of them off our normal trails if you know where to look.  Numbers are declining due to collectors digging them up and placing them in their garden or selling them.

We have not had time to research this one yet, but it looks like a toadstool.  Similar to the Fly Algaric.  It is a beautiful yellow and fades to orange as time passes.  They can be found dotted around the site in deep shade.

Streptopus lanceolatus - Rose Twistedstalk[/color]

A perennial forb, usually 2.5-6 dm tall when flowering.  The erect stem is hairy and often branches 1 or 2 times in older plants.

Flowers: pale pink to rose  Produces a red berry about 1cm in diameter.

Habitat: Rich, moist coniferous and deciduous forests, and there is plenty of that here.
