Ignoring the Agenda
I have realized that people usually lose interest in any topic that becomes over-mentioned or over-discussed. I mean, any time a new topic comes up, it becomes the dominant conversation starter but it can only hold this position for a finite period of time. If the topic refuses to go away, maybe due to media preference or pressure from certain groups, people just ignore the issue and move on. As an ardent environmental conversationalist, I have realized that although the issue of pollution and climate change and other environmental concerns has refused to go away, the wider public has managed to ignore or push it aside and move on to other more ‘interesting’ agendas. The risks are still there and people are still being advised on their roles in this issue, however, there appears to be a general consensus to ignore this rather ‘boring’ topic which seems to have run its course but it keeps rearing its head in mainstream media.
A different approach
Following the continuing ignorance on such an important topic, I recently adopted a more proactive approach in the fight for the environment. Our active environmental conservation group has decided to become actively involved in this fight in a bid to capture the public’s interests through goodwill actions. We have outlined an annual timetable of cleanup events covering various facilities in different cities. Our group which comprises of several professionals does not charge any money for our cleanup activities but accepts donations. We have chosen those facilities that were used for pollution-intensive business activities before their owners either closed shop or moved leaving a trail of environmental destruction in their wake.
“The role model citizen”
We have already cleaned a considerable number of facilities attracting national and even international acclaim. We usually follow the standard procedures before cleaning any facility. We contact the relevant authorities and acquire authorization to access and cleanup for the facility. Recently, we leaned a former chemical plant to the surprise of many. Being a professional environmental group, we are equipped and trained on how top handle, dispose and eventually clean up any type of pollutant whether chemical or not. We surprised everyone by sanitizing the facility and then painting it afresh and then inviting the local authorities to use the facility for any community development activity. All our other cleanup activities have also received considerable appreciation and we have managed to capture the interest of a significant proportion of the public. Our social media pages have received a huge following and our website has received a huge boost in terms of hits. Many public figures have commented on our work in the mainstream media and online. One prominent political figure mentioned our group in a TV interview and called us the role model citizens.” When handing out a generous donation, another prominent public figure claimed that our environmental engagement was an “eye opener” and that we had brought to fore a topic that had been buried for a long time. Our efforts seem to have helped to draw the public’s interest to this crucial but largely ignored issue. We hope that as we continue our cleanups others will at least play their individual roles hence assisting in the fight towards a better and cleaner world.
